An SEO cost calculator that shows the hours behind the price
Most tools called an SEO cost calculator ask you to type in a budget you do not have yet, or ask for an email before they show a number. This one works the other way round. Describe your market, your site and the work you want done, and it estimates the monthly hours each workstream needs, prices those hours with rate bands drawn from three published SEO pricing surveys, and shows the monthly range, the one-time setup and the first year total. You can compare a freelancer, an agency and a consultant side by side in six regions. No email gate, nothing stored.
Built and maintained by the Hustle Marketers team, who have scoped and priced SEO retainers for local, ecommerce and SaaS clients across the US, UK, Canada, Australia and India. Every rate band and benchmark on this page names its source and the period it covers.

How much does SEO cost per month?
Most businesses pay between $500 and $5,000 a month for ongoing SEO, and the most common single band is $501 to $1,000. Agencies average about $3,200 a month and freelancers about $1,350, according to an Ahrefs survey of 439 providers. Where the provider is based moves the price more than anything else: most India based SEOs charge $1,000 a month or less, while most US and Canadian providers charge more than that.
| Survey | Sample | What it found |
|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs, updated 2024 | 439 SEO providers | Agencies average $3,209 a month, consultants $3,250 and freelancers $1,348. Local SEO averages $1,557. The most common retainer band is $501 to $1,000 (20.4%). Average hourly rate $111. |
| Ahrefs, by region | Same survey | 76% of India based SEOs charge $1,000 a month or less and 85.7% charge $30 an hour or less. In the US and Canada, 79.1% charge at least $1,001 a month. |
| SE Ranking, 2025 | 260 agencies | 64% of agencies charge below $1,000 a month and 53% prefer monthly retainers. 40% of US and Canadian agencies charge over $125 an hour, against 6% of European agencies. |
| Backlinko, updated December 2025 | 300 plus SEO professionals | Monthly work ranges from 5 to 10 hours at entry level, 10 to 20 hours for a small business, 20 to 40 hours mid tier, 40 to 80 hours premium and 80 plus hours for enterprise. |

The retainer is rarely the whole bill. Content production, software and any one-time technical fixes sit on top, which is why the calculator separates the monthly fee from the setup and gives you a first year total.
How does this SEO cost calculator estimate the price?
It estimates hours first and prices them second. Each answer you give changes the hours a workstream needs, and the total is then multiplied by an hourly rate band for the provider type and region you picked. The low end of the range uses 90% of the hours at the bottom of the band, and the high end uses 110% of the hours at the top.
| Workstream | Hours we assume each month |
|---|---|
| Core optimization, tracking and reporting | 6 for one city, 8 plus 1.5 per extra location, 16 nationwide, 20 plus 6 per extra country. Multiplied by site size (1.0 to 2.0), competition (0.85 to 1.35) and site type (1.0 to 1.15). |
| Technical upkeep | 0, 2 or 4 hours depending on the state of the site, multiplied by site size. |
| New pages and articles | 4.5 hours each for the brief, writing, optimization and publishing. |
| Links and digital PR | 0, 4, 12 or 25 hours, with 25% more for national and international campaigns. |
| AI search visibility tracking | 2 hours for prompt tracking and updating pages that AI answers cite. |
| One-time setup | 8, 16 or 32 hours of audit work plus 6 hours of keyword research and roadmap, multiplied by site size and the number of markets. |
The hourly bands below are our working assumptions in US dollars. We set them from the three surveys above and from what we see in proposals, so they are estimates, not survey results.
| Provider location | Freelancer | Agency | Consultant |
|---|---|---|---|
| US and Canada | $60 to $100 | $90 to $150 | $140 to $225 |
| UK and Ireland | $45 to $85 | $75 to $130 | $120 to $200 |
| Australia and New Zealand | $50 to $90 | $85 to $150 | $130 to $210 |
| Western Europe | $40 to $75 | $65 to $115 | $100 to $170 |
| Eastern Europe and Latin America | $20 to $45 | $35 to $65 | $55 to $100 |
| India and South Asia | $8 to $20 | $15 to $35 | $25 to $60 |
A worked example: a local service business with a small, healthy site, medium competition, two new pages a month and light link building needs about 19 hours a month. With a US agency that prices at $1,550 to $3,150 a month plus $1,150 to $2,300 for setup. The same scope with an India based agency comes to about $250 to $750 a month.
Are there any reliable SEO cost calculators?
A few are useful, but many tools called SEO cost calculators actually measure return on a budget you type in, so they cannot tell you what the work should cost. A calculator is reliable when it passes these five checks.
- It asks about scope, not budget. Market reach, site size, competition and content volume decide the hours. A tool that starts with your budget only reflects it back.
- It shows the hours. A price without hours cannot be compared with a real proposal.
- It names its rate sources and their dates. SEO rates shift with region and year, so undated figures go stale quietly.
- It gives a range. Two honest providers will quote the same scope differently. A single number implies precision nobody has.
- It separates setup from the monthly fee. Audits and fixes are front loaded, and lumping them into the retainer distorts both.
Even a good calculator gives a planning range. To turn it into a price, a provider needs to see your site, your Search Console data and your competitors.
What makes SEO cost more or less?
| Factor | Pushes the cost up | Keeps the cost down |
|---|---|---|
| Market reach | Nationwide or several countries | One city or service area |
| Competition | Page one held by national brands or directories | Few established local competitors |
| Site size | Thousands of product or location pages | Under 50 pages |
| Technical state | Indexing errors, slow templates, a pending migration | Clean, fast site with working tracking |
| Content volume | 8 or more new pages a month | Optimizing existing pages only |
| Links | Digital PR campaigns | Citations and existing partners |
| Provider | US consultant | Offshore agency or freelancer |
Content volume and competition usually move the monthly number most. The technical state of the site mostly moves the setup cost.
How much should you budget for SEO?
Budget for the hours your scope needs and for at least a year, because the first few months go on fixes and foundations. In practice that means three numbers: the setup, the monthly fee and the first year total the calculator shows. If the first year total is more than the extra profit organic search could realistically bring in, cut the scope rather than the hourly rate.
To test that last point, run your forecast through our SEO ROI calculator, which shows when cumulative return should cross cumulative spend. If you are weighing SEO against paid search, the marketing budget calculator helps split one budget across channels.
How much does SEO cost in India?
India is the lowest cost region in every published survey. Ahrefs found that 76% of India based SEOs charge $1,000 a month or less, 85.7% charge $30 an hour or less, and 93.75% charge $1,500 or less per project. In rupees, our model puts a local service business with an India based agency at about ₹24,000 to ₹69,000 a month, and a nationwide lead generation site with four new pages a month at about ₹50,000 to ₹1,42,000.
Lower rates are not lower quality by default, but the spread between providers is wide. Ask any India based provider, including us, for the hours and deliverables behind the fee.
What does AI search optimization add to SEO cost?
Usually a small amount of extra time rather than a separate budget. The calculator adds 2 hours a month for tracking prompts in AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity and for updating the pages those answers cite. The bigger cost is content: pages that answer specific questions clearly tend to be the ones AI answers pick up, so a higher content setting often matters more than the tracking line. SE Ranking found that 61% of agencies are considering adding AI search optimization, with most planning to fold it into existing SEO work rather than sell it separately.
What red flags should you look for in an SEO quote?
- Guaranteed rankings. Google’s own guidance on hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a number one ranking on Google.
- Link packages sold by volume. Buying links to manipulate rankings breaks Google’s spam policies and can cost you rankings.
- No hours or deliverables. If a quote cannot say what happens each month, you cannot compare it with this estimate or with another quote.
- You do not own the work. Your Search Console, analytics, content and Google Business Profile should stay in your name.
- A long lock-in with no exit. Ask what happens if results or reporting fall short.

SEO cost calculator FAQs
Is SEO a monthly cost or a one-time cost?
Both. Most providers charge a one-time setup for the audit, keyword research and first fixes, then a monthly fee for ongoing work. Ahrefs found that 78.2% of SEO providers offer monthly retainers, 48.9% offer per project pricing and 34.8% offer hourly billing, and many offer more than one.
How much does local SEO cost?
Ahrefs puts the average local SEO retainer at $1,557 a month, with agencies averaging $1,819 and freelancers about $1,150. In this calculator, a local service business with a small site, two new pages a month and light link building comes to $1,550 to $3,150 a month with a US agency.
How many hours of SEO work do I need each month?
Backlinko groups monthly work into 5 to 10 hours at entry level, 10 to 20 hours for a small business, 20 to 40 hours mid tier, 40 to 80 hours premium and 80 plus hours for enterprise. The calculator shows where your scope lands and which workstreams use the hours.
How much does an SEO audit cost?
The setup line in the calculator covers the audit, keyword research and roadmap, and ranges from 14 hours for a small healthy site to well over 100 hours for a large international site with major issues. Our SEO audit cost guide breaks down audit pricing in more detail.
Why do SEO quotes for the same site vary so much?
Providers quote different hours, different hourly rates and different scopes. One may include content writing and link building while another prices only technical and on-page work. Compare quotes on hours and deliverables, not the headline fee.
Is it better to pay for SEO by the hour, by project or on a retainer?
A retainer suits ongoing work such as content and link building, a project suits a one-off audit or migration, and hourly billing suits advice and reviews. SE Ranking found that 53% of agencies prefer monthly retainers.
Does this calculator store my data?
No. The calculator runs in your browser. Nothing you select is saved, sent or used to contact you, and there is no email gate.

How we built this calculator: we read the three most cited SEO pricing surveys, set hourly bands for each region and provider type from their findings, and set the hours per workstream from how we scope our own SEO proposals. The bands and hours are our assumptions and are labelled as such. Rates were last checked on 22 October 2026.
This calculator gives a planning estimate, not a quote. It excludes SEO software, paid advertising and any paid placements.
