What Does a Magento SEO Consultant Do?
A Magento SEO consultant audits your store, figures out what is stopping categories and products from ranking, and gives your team a ranked plan to fix it. The consultant decides what should change and checks it once it ships. Your developers, or your agency, make the changes.
That split suits Magento. Most fixes live in admin settings, layout XML, templates and modules, so the person who knows your code should write them, and the person who knows search should define what they need to do. For the technical detail behind the work, see our Magento SEO guide.

Consultant, Agency, Expert or Specialist: Which Do You Need?
The names overlap, so this is how the work is split across our Magento services:
- A Magento SEO consultant gives you an audit and a ranked roadmap, written as tickets your developers ship. Best when you have developers and need direction.
- Our Magento SEO agency service plans the SEO and makes the changes, content included.
- Our Magento SEO expert service starts with diagnosis, for an organic traffic drop you cannot explain.
- Our Magento SEO specialist service does hands-on implementation inside your codebase, next to your team.
Not sure which fits? Start with the audit. It shows how much of the work is decisions and how much is development.

What You Get From a Magento SEO Consultant
A consulting engagement starts with a full technical and content audit of your store, using your own Search Console, analytics and crawl data. You get a prioritized fix list with the exact setting, template or module change for each item, plus how to test it once it ships.
After that, we review your developers’ work and recheck the results, so the roadmap keeps pace with what actually changed. For the technical background, read our Magento SEO guide. If you would rather hand over the implementation, our Magento SEO agency service covers both.
What Does a Magento SEO Audit Include?
The audit covers the parts of a Magento store that decide what Google crawls, indexes and ranks. Each area is checked per store view, on the live store rather than the admin screen alone.

Crawl and Index Control
We check the product and category canonical settings, which ship switched off, the robots tags on filtered pages, internal search URLs and robots.txt. Core Magento cannot noindex layered navigation pages, so every filter type gets its own rule.

URLs and URL Rewrites
We review category paths in product URLs, URL suffixes and the 301s created when URL keys change. On large catalogs we measure the url_rewrite table and look for redirect chains and dead targets.

Layered Navigation and Filters
We decide which filter combinations deserve an indexable landing page, which should be blocked in robots.txt, and which are already indexed and need a noindex first. Empty filter results should return a 404.

Speed and Core Web Vitals
We read field data for LCP, INP and CLS against Google's targets of 2.5 seconds, 200 milliseconds and 0.1, then trace failures to their cause: Luma JavaScript, uncached pages, heavy images or late banners.

Categories, Products and Keywords
We map each search to the page that should rank: product types to categories, models to products, questions to guides. Then we check titles, meta templates for new products, category copy and duplicated manufacturer text.

Pagination, Sitemaps and robots.txt
We check that paginated categories carry their own canonical, which 2.4.7 and earlier get wrong, that each store view's XML sitemap lists only canonical URLs, and that cron is still regenerating it.

Structured Data
We test Product, offer, shipping and return markup, breadcrumbs and organization data, and look for duplicate JSON-LD when an extension and the theme both output it.

Store Views and hreflang
Magento has no built-in hreflang. For stores selling in several countries or languages, we check that each store view lists every alternate, that the links are reciprocal and that store codes are not leaking into URLs.

Measurement and Baseline
We compare indexed pages in Search Console with the products and categories that should rank, read the Page indexing reasons and crawl stats, and set up organic revenue by landing page in GA4.
When Is a Magento SEO Consultant the Right Fit?
A consultant suits stores where someone else can make the changes. These are the situations where that model fits best.

How a Magento SEO Consulting Engagement Works
Every engagement follows the same six steps, so you always know what comes next and what we need from your team.

1. Access and Baseline
You give us read access to Search Console and GA4 and a limited admin user. We record what should be indexed, what is indexed and where organic revenue comes from today.

2. Crawl and Configuration Review
We crawl the store, read the SEO settings for each store view and compare the sitemap, canonical tags and internal links, so every finding is tested on the live site.
3. Ranked Roadmap
Each issue is ranked by the traffic and revenue at stake and the development effort it needs, so the top of the list is what is worth doing first.

4. Developer Tickets
Every fix is written as a ticket: the exact setting, template or module change, the pages it affects, and how to test it before and after release.

5. Release Checks
We review changes on staging where you have one and crawl the live store after each release, so one fix does not break canonicals, robots tags or redirects somewhere else.
6. Monthly Review
Each month we go through indexed pages, crawl stats and organic revenue by page type with you, and update the roadmap as fixes ship and new issues appear.

What Access Does a Magento SEO Consultant Need?
Read access is enough to start. Google’s own advice on hiring an SEO is to grant only read access to Search Console at the audit stage, and we work the same way. This is what we ask for:
- Google Search Console: a restricted user, which has view rights only, on each property you use, including any store view on its own domain.
- Google Analytics 4: Viewer access, so we can read organic sessions and revenue by landing page.
- Magento admin: a separate user with a role limited to the sections we review, set up under System > Permissions > User Roles. Magento roles cannot be made view-only, so we agree in writing not to change live settings, or you can give us this access on staging instead. No shared logins.
- A staging URL, if you have one, so changes can be checked before release.
- Your Magento version and patch, and the list of installed extensions.
- Recent release dates and any planned upgrade, theme or migration work.
- Google Merchant Center, if you run Shopping, so product data can be checked alongside the site.
- Optional: server or CDN logs and read access to the code repository, for large catalogs or crawl problems.
You keep ownership of every account and all of the code. The audit does not change your live configuration.
How Much Does a Magento SEO Consultant Cost?
Our SEO work starts from $500 a month. A consulting engagement is quoted after we have looked at your store, because catalog size, the number of store views and how much release checking you want all change the scope. The audit request button on this page is the first step.
For context, published figures vary widely:
- In Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers, last updated in 2024, the most common hourly rate was $75 to $100 and the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000.
- Clutch’s SEO pricing guide, updated in September 2026, says most SEO agencies listed there charge $100 to $149 an hour.
- Published Magento SEO audit prices we found in October 2026 started at $299, and one 2026 Magento pricing guide put a comprehensive technical audit at $2,500 to $6,000.
Budget for developer time as well. A roadmap only pays off once it ships, so ask for an estimate of the development effort behind each recommendation. Google’s hiring guidance says an audit should give you realistic estimates of improvement and of the work involved.
How Should You Judge a Magento SEO Consultant?
Google publishes a list of questions to ask any SEO before you hire. For a Magento store, add these:
- Which Magento version and patch are we on, and what does that change? A good consultant knows, for example, that pagination canonicals behave differently before and after 2.4.8.
- Which of our filter pages should be indexed, and how will you handle the ones already in Google?
- Who writes the changes, and what exactly will our developers receive?
- How will you check a fix after it ships?
- What will you report each month? Look for indexed pages, crawl stats and organic revenue, not rankings alone.
- Will Search Console, GA4 and the code stay in our accounts?
Walk away from anyone who guarantees a number one ranking. Google says no one can. Be careful, too, with advice to noindex every filter page, to install several SEO extensions at once, or to change URL suffixes on a store that already ranks.

Magento SEO Priorities by Industry
These are the Magento issues we check first for each type of store.

Fashion & Apparel
Configurable products with color and size options, color filters that multiply URLs, and seasonal collections that disappear without redirects. Each needs a rule before it costs rankings.

Beauty & Skincare
Category pages built around ingredients and skin concerns, product copy that is not the brand's stock text, and careful claims. Review markup only where genuine reviews show on the page.

Electronics
Spec attributes create large filter sets, and model numbers drive product searches. We decide which spec filters earn landing pages and keep product compare pages out of the index.

Home & Furniture
Long research cycles favor buying guides that link into categories. Large lifestyle images often decide LCP, and fabric or finish options need one indexable parent product.

Automotive & Accessories
Make, model and year filters can turn one category into thousands of URLs. Only the fitment pages people actually search for should become indexable landing pages.

 Health & Wellness
Health topics fall under what Google calls Your Money or Your Life (YMYL) topics, so product and category copy needs careful claims, clear sources and real authorship.

B2B & Wholesale
Company accounts, quotes, requisition lists and shared catalogs should stay out of the index, while public category pages still need to rank for trade searches.
What to Expect From the Work
Results depend on your catalog, competition and how quickly your team ships the fixes. What a consultant can promise is clarity: what to fix, in what order, and how to tell whether it worked.

Goals Agreed Up Front
We agree the goals and how they will be measured before work starts.

On-Time Delivery
Delivered on time without delays.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a Magento SEO consultant do?
A Magento SEO consultant audits your store, ranks the problems by the traffic and revenue at stake, and turns the fixes into a roadmap your developers can ship. We check each change after release and update the plan, while your team or agency builds it.
What does a Magento SEO audit include?
Canonical and robots settings, layered navigation and filter URLs, URL rewrites and redirects, pagination, XML sitemaps and robots.txt, Core Web Vitals, structured data, store views and hreflang, plus category and product content. Each finding comes with the fix and a way to test it.
How much does Magento SEO consulting cost?
Our SEO work starts from $500 a month, and consulting is quoted once we have seen the store. Published Magento SEO audit prices we found in October 2026 started at $299, and one 2026 pricing guide put a comprehensive technical audit at $2,500 to $6,000. Budget for the developer hours needed to ship the fixes too.
Can I hire a Magento SEO consultant instead of full services?
Yes, if you have developers who can make the changes. A consultant gives direction and checks the work. If you need one team to plan and implement, our Magento SEO agency service covers both.
Do I need a Magento developer as well as an SEO consultant?
Usually, yes. Admin settings can be changed without code, but filter rules, pagination canonicals, structured data, hreflang and speed fixes live in templates, modules and server configuration. The roadmap is written so a Magento developer can pick it up directly.
Do you work with Adobe Commerce as well as Magento Open Source?
Yes. The SEO fundamentals are the same on both. Adobe Commerce adds B2B features, Live Search and, on cloud, Fastly and environment rules that control robots.txt and indexing, which we include in the audit when they apply.
Should every Magento filter page be indexed?
No. Give an indexable landing page only to filters people search for, such as a category plus one attribute. Block the rest in robots.txt. If filter URLs are already indexed, noindex them first and add the robots.txt rule once they drop out.
How long does Magento SEO take to show results?
Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Ranking gains on competitive category terms depend on your competition and on how quickly fixes ship, so a consultant should give you signals to watch, such as indexed pages and crawl stats, rather than a fixed date.
Do you keep SEO intact during a Magento upgrade or migration?
That is one of the best times to bring in a consultant. We set the SEO requirements before launch, map every changed URL to a 301, and crawl before and after go-live to compare canonicals, robots tags, structured data and redirects.
Is Magento SEO friendly?
Once it is configured, yes. Magento gives you control over URLs, templates and structured data. But the canonical settings ship switched off, filters create duplicate URLs and the default Luma theme is heavy, so an unconfigured store can create far more URLs than it has products.
