Summarize this article with:
Yes, ecommerce brands can run ChatGPT ads now. OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager beta accepts product feeds, US Shopify stores can launch from a dedicated Shopify app, and the US minimum budget is $25 a day on average. Costs vary widely and public conversion data is thin, so treat it as a test measured against your break-even ROAS.
Key Observations
- Only logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans see ads. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans have none.
- Product feed ads show an image, title, star rating, price, sale price and brand. Feed items expire after two weeks.
- There is no keyword targeting. Context hints describe what you sell, and feed campaigns target by country only.
- OpenAI’s help page says creative enhancements switch on by default on October 31, 2026. Decide before October 29 to be safe.
- Published CPC samples vary widely, and Google converted better in all four published same-advertiser comparisons.
- Test for four weeks with kill rules tied to break-even ROAS, which is 1 divided by contribution margin.
Are ChatGPT ads available for ecommerce brands yet?
Yes. OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager is in beta and listed as available in 56 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and India, when we checked on October 26, 2026. The legal entity that advertises and gets billed must be based in a listed country. US Shopify stores also get a dedicated ChatGPT Ads app.
The country list and billing rule come from OpenAI’s Ads Manager availability page (checked October 26, 2026).
| Date | What changed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| February 9, 2026 | US test starts for logged-in adults on Free and Go | OpenAI |
| May 5, 2026 | CPC buying, self-serve beta, Conversions API and pixel | OpenAI |
| August 11, 2026 | Launch in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea | OpenAI |
| September 16, 2026 | Shopify app for US merchants, AI ad drafting, Sponsored Agents test | OpenAI |
| October 5, 2026 | Image generation ad format test, measurement partners, Negative Phrases | OpenAI |
| October 31, 2026 | Creative enhancements on by default | OpenAI Help Center |
Sponsored Agents, where people chat with an AI representative of a business, are a limited alpha for selected advertisers, and OpenAI is not taking early access requests (OpenAI Help Center, checked October 26, 2026). For stores, that leaves product feed ads and standard ads that link to your site.
Who sees ads in ChatGPT?
Logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans have no ads, users who say or are predicted to be under 18 see none, and ads are not eligible near sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health or politics.
That comes from OpenAI’s ads announcement (February 9, 2026, updated August 11, 2026), which also says ads are labeled as sponsored and kept separate from the answer. Its basics article (checked October 26, 2026) adds that ads appear below responses.
The US launched first. The same post says pilots in Canada, Australia and New Zealand were announced on March 26, 2026, and the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea went live on August 11, 2026.
So shoppers who pay for ChatGPT are out of reach, and health or wellness brands should expect fewer eligible conversations.
How do ChatGPT product feed ads work?
You upload a product catalog to Ads Manager, group products into ad groups with filters, and add one ad template per ad group. ChatGPT then shows product ads with images, titles, star ratings, prices, sale prices and your brand. Feed items expire after two weeks, so schedule automatic uploads.
OpenAI’s product feed help page (checked October 26, 2026) accepts a CSV or TXT upload, a hosted URL or an SFTP connection. Because items expire after two weeks, it recommends a hosted URL or automated SFTP.
The same page says the ad template lets you select only the image field, and that products in an ads feed do not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations during the beta. OpenAI’s targeting documentation (checked October 26, 2026) adds that new product feed campaigns target and exclude locations at country level only.
The feed specification (checked October 26, 2026) lists nine required fields. Check these first:
| Feed field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| title | Shown in the ad. Lead with the product type and the attribute buyers ask about. |
| image_url | Shown in the ad and the only field the template lets you select. |
| price, sale price, brand | Shown in the ad. Prices must match the landing page. |
| availability | Out of stock items waste clicks. |
| is_ads_eligible | Set to true for products you want Ads to process. |
| ads_metadata | Your own product filter keys, such as a margin tier label. |
Most stores will reuse their Google Merchant Center feed. Check it first with our free feed attribute mapper, which flags missing and invalid attributes. Then tag products by margin tier in ads_metadata, so each ad group can bid against its own break-even ROAS.
Should you use the Shopify ChatGPT Ads app or Ads Manager?
US Shopify stores should install the app, because it syncs the catalog into a ChatGPT Ads product feed and connects the OpenAI Pixel for Shopify without manual feed work. Then manage the detail in Ads Manager. Stores outside the US, or on other platforms, use Ads Manager with a hosted or SFTP feed.
OpenAI launched the app on September 16, 2026, naming Shopify its first ecommerce partner (OpenAI). The setup guide (checked October 26, 2026) says it is available to all Shopify customers in the US.
| Question | Shopify app | Ads Manager |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | All US Shopify merchants | Advertisers billed in a listed country |
| Product feed | Synced from Shopify | CSV or TXT, hosted URL or SFTP |
| Tracking | OpenAI Pixel for Shopify | Pixel, Conversions API or both |
| Ad types | All products, single product or website | Feed ad groups with product filters, plus standard ads |
| Budgets | Fixed increments | Finer amounts, such as $28 |
The app links your catalog and pixel to Ads Manager, so use both. Install the app, place a test order to confirm events arrive, then build ad groups, hints and bids in Ads Manager. Do not disconnect the app mid-test, because campaigns that depend on the feed may pause.
How much does a ChatGPT ad click cost?
OpenAI publishes no CPC benchmarks, so you only have practitioner samples. Search Engine Journal found advertiser CPCs from under $3 to about $13, and ppcone.cz found a $4.41 median across 15 dollar-billed campaigns. Your own cost depends on your bids, budget, products and the auction you enter.
OpenAI’s May 5, 2026 update confirms CPM and CPC buying without rates, and its conversion-optimized campaigns page (checked October 26, 2026) says there is no recommended bid amount yet. oCPC campaigns aim at one standard conversion event with a bid cap per ad group but bill per click. Maximize results, the default for eligible new ad groups, guarantees no CPA or ROAS, so use Manual: Max bid for a firm limit.
| Source | Sample | What it reported |
|---|---|---|
| Search Engine Journal, September 8, 2026 | A handful of advertisers and agencies | Advertiser CPCs from below $3 to about $13. One multi-market test averaged $9.89, with $5.10 in the UK, $10.62 in the US and $22.89 in New Zealand. |
| ppcone.cz, September 29, 2026, updated October 14, 2026 | 49 published cases. CPC from 15 dollar-billed campaigns, CTR from 24. | Median CPC about $4.41 ($0.76 to $14.80). Median CTR about 1.25% (0.35% to 7.9%). |
| eMarketer, citing The Information and Adweek (checked October 26, 2026) | Early 2026 pilot only | About $60 CPM and commitments of roughly $200,000. Pilot terms, not today’s rates. |
If you have seen “$3 to $5” quoted, Search Engine Journal explains it was a suggested starting maximum bid, not a benchmark. ppcone.cz also warns that its sample is not representative.
What CPC can your store afford?
Break-even CPC equals average order value x conversion rate x contribution margin. This example uses a 2% conversion rate and a 35% margin.
| Average order value | Revenue per click at 2% | Break-even CPC at 35% margin |
|---|---|---|
| $60 | $1.20 | $0.42 |
| $150 | $3.00 | $1.05 |
| $300 | $6.00 | $2.10 |
| $600 | $12.00 | $4.20 |
| $1,000 | $20.00 | $7.00 |
Here, only order values near $600 or higher get close to the $4.41 sample median. Lower order values need a higher conversion rate, a lower bid or strong repeat purchases. Our break-even ROAS guide shows how to calculate your margin.

What is the minimum budget for ChatGPT ads?
In the US, the standard minimum daily budget is $25, and the minimum varies by market and currency. Budgets are averaged over a seven-day period, so a single day can spend up to twice your daily budget and a full week up to seven times it.
That comes from OpenAI’s daily budgets page (checked October 26, 2026). With fixed bidding, your daily budget must also be at least your highest effective per-event bid, including audience bid adjustments.
The minimum is not a useful test budget. At the $4.41 sample median, $25 a day buys five or six clicks, about 40 a week. That is enough to read CTR and CPC, not ROAS.
How are context hints different from keywords?
In Google Ads, keywords decide which searches can trigger your ad. Context hints do not. They are short descriptions, added at ad group level, that help ChatGPT judge when your products are relevant to a conversation. They cannot enforce locations, schedules or exclusions, and OpenAI says they are not exact-match keywords.
OpenAI’s context hints guide (checked October 26, 2026) asks for a clear, natural phrase about one idea: what the product is, who it helps or when it is useful. Update hints when prices, promotions or stock change. The targeting documentation allows up to 2,000 hints per ad group.
| Keyword-style hint (weak) | Context hint (stronger) |
|---|---|
| hiking boots, waterproof boots, wide boots | Waterproof hiking boots in wide fits for people with broad feet |
| gift for mom, jewelry gift, necklace | Engraved birthstone necklaces bought as birthday gifts for mom |
| coffee grinder, burr grinder, travel | Hand burr coffee grinders for travelers who brew pour-over coffee |
Because hints exclude nothing, use the real controls:
- Negative Phrases, available to qualifying advertisers since October 5, 2026 (OpenAI), for brand placement rules.
- Customer list audiences, which need 25,000 matched users for inclusion or bid multipliers, with 100,000 recommended. Smaller lists work as exclusions, such as recent buyers. Multipliers run from 0.1x to 10x (OpenAI Help Center, checked October 26, 2026).
Should you turn off ChatGPT creative enhancements?
For a first test, yes. OpenAI’s help page says creative enhancements switch on by default for new and existing campaigns on October 31, 2026. They can rewrite headlines and descriptions, resize images, change destination URLs and translate ad text, without you approving each version. Fixed creative keeps your test readable.
The creative enhancements page gave October 31 when we checked on October 26, 2026. PPC Land (October 21, 2026) reported that OpenAI’s email said October 30 and an earlier page version said October 29, so set your choice before October 29.
In September, OpenAI described adapting headlines and translating copy as an opt-in feature (OpenAI, September 16, 2026). You can opt out at account level or per campaign in Ads Manager under Manage settings. Campaign settings override the account default, and existing opt-outs are kept.
For a store, a swapped landing page can break the match between ad and product, and rewritten copy can drift from your prices. Test with enhancements off, then switch them on for one campaign and compare it with an identical campaign that keeps them off.
Do ChatGPT ads convert as well as Google Shopping?
Not on the public evidence so far. In ppcone.cz’s review of published cases, Google Ads had the higher conversion rate in all four same-advertiser comparisons. OpenAI has published stronger individual examples, but the public samples are small and most tests were short, so test your own store against Google Shopping.
The ppcone.cz review (September 29, 2026, updated October 14, 2026) found paid ChatGPT conversion rates from 0.21% to about 2%. In one comparison, ChatGPT converted at 0.46% against 5.3% on Google.
OpenAI’s October 5, 2026 update reported that WeightWatchers’ attributed cost per acquisition was 15.3% lower than its blended paid search benchmark, per DV Rockerbox, and that 93% of Portland Leather’s ChatGPT Ads visitors were new, per Triple Whale. Search Engine Journal (September 8, 2026) reported that Common Thread Collective estimated ROAS between 3.3x and 6.8x, depending on the attribution model. Pick one model for both channels before you start.
| Factor | ChatGPT feed ads | Google Shopping |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Conversation context, helped by context hints | The search query |
| Feed campaign location | Country only | Down to city and radius |
| Bidding | Maximize results, Manual: Max bid, or oCPC with a bid cap | Includes target ROAS |
| Competitive data | No Auction Insights or impression share, per Search Engine Journal | Auction Insights and impression share |
What should an online store test first?
Test your best-selling, well-reviewed products in one product feed campaign for four weeks, with creative enhancements off and tracking verified. Set kill rules from your break-even ROAS, which is 1 divided by contribution margin, and judge every week against Google Shopping for the same products and dates.
We have not published client results from ChatGPT ads. This is the plan we would run, built on how we judge any new channel against Google Shopping.
Take an example store with a 35% contribution margin after product cost, shipping, payment fees and returns, and a $150 average order value. Break-even ROAS is 1 / 0.35 = 2.86. Break-even CPA is $150 x 0.35 = $52.50. Break-even CPC at a 2% conversion rate is $1.05. Our guide to ROAS vs break-even ROAS vs target ROAS explains the difference.
| Week | Setup | Budget | Main metric | Kill rule | Compare with Google Shopping |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Feed campaign, 20 to 50 best sellers with reviews and stock, Maximize results, enhancements off, test order placed | $25 a day average ($175) | Purchase events, CTR, CPC | Pause and fix if the test order is missing in Ads Manager | CTR and CPC, same products and week |
| 2 | Split by margin tier: one ad group on Maximize results, one on Manual: Max bid at break-even CPC | $50 a day ($350) | CPC, cost per add to cart | Pause an ad group that spends 2x break-even CPA ($105) with no sale | Cost per add to cart by margin tier |
| 3 | Same products, two hint sets: use case vs buyer type | $50 a day ($350) | CTR, add-to-cart rate | After 1,000 impressions each, pause the set with under half the other’s CTR | Shopping search terms, to see which angle buyers use |
| 4 | Keep the winners, hold budget | $50 a day ($350) | ROAS vs break-even ROAS, new customer share | Stop below half of break-even ROAS (1.43). Fix between half and break-even. Above it, raise budget about 20% a week. | ROAS, conversion rate and order value, same products, dates and attribution model |
The plan costs about $1,225 before scaling. At the $4.41 sample median that is roughly 280 clicks, or about three orders at a 1% conversion rate. Week 4 ROAS is a direction, not a verdict, which is why the earlier kill rules use spend against break-even CPA and add-to-cart rate. If you land near break-even, run a second round with more budget.
Keep it fair: same products, same dates and one attribution source, such as GA4 or Triple Whale, for both channels. If Shopping or branded search dips while ChatGPT ads run, some ChatGPT sales may not be new. For help running the test, see our ecommerce PPC management services.
FAQs
Short answers to six common questions. US Shopify stores can run ChatGPT ads through an app, Plus users see no ads, there are no keywords, tracking runs on the OpenAI pixel or Conversions API, OpenAI says ads do not change answers, and the US minimum is $25 a day.
Can Shopify stores run ChatGPT ads?
Yes. The ChatGPT Ads app is open to all US Shopify merchants and syncs your catalog and OpenAI Pixel events (OpenAI Help Center, checked October 26, 2026). Stores elsewhere can use Ads Manager with a feed if they are billed in a listed country.
Do ChatGPT Plus users see ads?
No. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans have no ads. Only logged-in adults on Free and Go see them (OpenAI, February 9, 2026).
Can you target keywords in ChatGPT ads?
No. You describe products with context hints, which OpenAI says are not exact-match keywords, and control delivery with location, platform and audience settings. Qualifying advertisers can add Negative Phrases.
How do you track ChatGPT ad conversions?
Use the OpenAI pixel, the Conversions API or both. Shopify stores connect the OpenAI Pixel for Shopify through the app. oCPC campaigns need a supported standard event, not a custom one (OpenAI Help Center, checked October 26, 2026). Partners include Triple Whale, Northbeam and AppsFlyer (OpenAI, October 5, 2026).
Do ads change ChatGPT’s answers?
OpenAI says no. Its October 5, 2026 announcement states that advertising does not influence ChatGPT’s answers. Getting mentioned in answers is organic work, covered in our guides to ranking in ChatGPT search and ChatGPT rank tracking tools.
Is there a minimum spend?
For self-serve, OpenAI sets a minimum daily budget: $25 a day in the US, averaged over seven days (OpenAI Help Center, checked October 26, 2026). The roughly $200,000 commitments eMarketer reported applied to the early pilot.
