Quick Answer: What are local citations?
Local citations are online mentions of a business’s name, address and phone number (NAP), usually with a website link, on sites other than its own. Structured citations sit on directories and map platforms such as Google, Bing, Apple, Yelp and Facebook. Unstructured citations appear in news stories, blogs and association pages. Both help search engines and AI assistants confirm a business is real and its details are correct.
Key Observations
- Wrong data elsewhere can overwrite your profile. Google uses licensed third-party data and crawled web content, and may update your Business Profile when other sources say your details are outdated.
- Citations are a small direct ranking factor. Whitespark’s 2026 expert survey puts them at 6% of local pack factors, but 13% of AI search visibility factors.
- AI tools read directories. Yext found listings made up 54.53% of distinct URLs across 17.2 million AI citations in late 2025.
- Older guides use dead names. Neustar Localeze is now TransUnion Digital Business Profile, Infogroup is Data Axle, and Apple Business Connect is now Apple Business. Our Apple Business Connect guide covers the new sign-up, verification and review times.
- Accuracy beats volume. A few claimed, correct core listings matter more than hundreds of directory submissions Google may never index.
What counts as a local citation?
A local citation is any place online that names your business together with its contact details. The core is NAP: name, address and phone number. Most citations add a website URL, and a full directory listing adds hours, categories, photos and a description.
What is the difference between structured and unstructured citations?
- Structured: your details in a fixed format on a directory or map platform, such as Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business, Yelp or an industry directory.
- Unstructured: a mention inside other content, such as a local news story, a chamber member page or a supplier’s dealer locator. Harder to get, and usually more trusted.
A citation does not need a link. Google’s John Mueller said in 2022 that Google does not treat unlinked mentions as links. That is why we treat citations and links as separate jobs, and our local link building guide covers the link side.

What is the difference between listings and citations?
A listing is a profile on one platform that the business can claim and edit, such as a Google Business Profile or a Yelp page. A citation is any mention of your NAP, whether you control it or not. Every listing is a citation, but many citations are not listings.
| Listing | Citation | Backlink | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A claimable profile | Any NAP mention | A hyperlink to your site |
| Who controls it | The business, once claimed | Often the publishing site | The linking site |
| Main job | Correct details where customers search | A consistent identity across the web | Authority for organic rankings |
Do citations still help local rankings in 2026?
Yes, but less directly than citation sellers suggest. Google’s local ranking help page says results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and describes prominence through links and reviews. It does not name citations or directories.
The indirect effect is clearer. Google builds Business Profiles from sources that include licensed third-party data and crawled web content. It says that if sources report your info is incorrect or outdated, it may update your profile, and when a suggested edit needs your review you get 4 days to respond. Old phone numbers and addresses on directories are one way wrong data gets back onto your profile.

| Factor group | Local pack | Local organic | AI search visibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | 32% | 7% | 12% |
| Reviews | 20% | 6% | 16% |
| On-page | 15% | 33% | 24% |
| Links | 8% | 24% | 13% |
| Citations | 6% | 7% | 13% |

Whitespark notes citations have been losing weight for traditional rankings for about a decade. Practitioners in the Local Search Forum’s Citations in 2026 thread broadly agree: core citations matter, mass submissions do not, and a citation Google never indexes does little.
Our view: for an established business with clean core listings, new citations rarely move the map pack. For a new business, a recent move or conflicting details online, cleanup is often a first job. Our map pack SEO guide covers what moves rankings more.
Why do citations matter for AI search?
AI assistants answer local questions by pulling business facts from the web, including directories. The evidence is newer and thinner than for rankings, so here is what is documented, with its limits.
| Source | What it shows | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Help Center | ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers (Microsoft is named) and shows restaurant availability from OpenTable, Resy or Yelp. | No full list of local data providers. |
| BrightLocal (Dec 2024) | 800 ChatGPT local searches: business websites were 58% of sources, mentions 27%, directories 15%. | One platform, one month. |
| BrightLocal (July 2025) | AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and ChatGPT all used directories. Yelp was a source in 33% of searches. | 20 searches. |
| Yext (April 2026) | 17.2 million citations from four AI models in Q4 2025: listings were 54.53% of distinct URLs, but each website URL was cited more often. | Yext sells listings. Correlation only. |
| Whitespark 2026 survey | 3 of the top 5 AI visibility factors are citation factors. | Expert opinion. |
Darren Shaw puts it plainly in Whitespark’s 2026 report: “In AI SEO, mentions (citations) are the new link.” Because each assistant uses different sources, Google alone is not enough. Bing matters because Microsoft is one of ChatGPT search’s providers and Bing plans deeper Copilot integrations. Yelp matters because it keeps turning up in these studies.
Wrong data spreads too. One Local Search Forum tip: ask an assistant where it found a wrong phone number or address, then fix that source. Our view is that citations alone will not make an assistant recommend you, since reviews and your own site carry weight too, but inconsistent citations give it conflicting facts to repeat. Our AI visibility checker shows how assistants describe you.
Which citation sites matter most in the US, Australia and the UK?
Start with the platforms that power maps and assistants, then the large directories that show up for your business name, then niche and city sites.
| Site type | United States | Australia | United Kingdom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search and maps (do first) | Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business | Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business | Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business |
| Large directories | Yelp, Facebook, BBB, Foursquare, Trustpilot | Yellow Pages Australia, True Local, Localsearch, Word of Mouth, Facebook | Yell, Yelp UK, Bark, Brownbook, Facebook |
| Map and navigation data | Waze, OpenStreetMap | Waze, Here, TomTom | Waze, Here, TomTom, OpenStreetMap |
| Local and community | Patch, local chamber | Nextdoor Australia, local chamber | Regional newspaper directories |

Which data aggregators still operate in 2026?
Data aggregators collect business data and distribute it to other platforms. The best-known ones are US-focused, and many guides still name companies that have changed or closed.
| Name in older guides | Status in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Neustar Localeze | TransUnion Digital Business Profile, which says it partners with over 80 platforms |
| Infogroup (Express Update) | Data Axle, which offers listings management |
| Factual | Merged into Foursquare, which reports 100M+ places in 200+ countries |
| Acxiom | Listings product discontinued at the end of 2019 |

How do you find niche and city citation sites?
- Search like a customer: your main service plus city, noting every directory on page one.
- Check competitors: search the names and phone numbers of businesses in your map pack.
- Use real relationships: trade associations, licensing bodies, chambers and supplier dealer locators.
- Ask the assistants: Whitespark suggests asking ChatGPT and Gemini which directories they consider important for your industry.

How do you build local citations step by step?
- Write one NAP master record: name, address format, main local phone, website URL, categories, hours and descriptions. Google says your name should match the one used consistently on your storefront, website and stationery.
- Fix Google Business Profile first. Our Google Business Profile guide covers each field.
- Claim Bing Places and Apple Business. Both are free. Bing can import from Google, as our Bing Places guide explains.
- Submit to the aggregators (US), usually through a reseller. Watch renewals: Whitespark notes the paid Localeze listing expires after one year and then cannot be edited.
- Claim before you create. Search each core directory for an existing listing first, so you do not make duplicates.
- Add industry and city sites from your research, using the same master record.
- Earn unstructured citations through associations, sponsorships and local press.
- Log everything. Record each URL, login and status on a business-owned email, and keep your site’s NAP and local business schema identical to the master record.

Should you submit citations manually, through aggregators or with a service?
For local citation submission, manual work is slow but you own every login, so always handle Google, Bing, Apple and your top directories this way. Aggregators spread data fast, but you do not control which sites accept it. Paid services are either one-off submissions, where listings stay live after you stop paying, or API subscriptions, where you should ask what happens to your listings if you cancel.
How do you run a local citation audit and cleanup?

A local SEO citation audit finds every version of your details online and fixes the wrong ones. In our experience, most problems trace back to a move, a rebrand, a new phone system or an old bulk submission.
- List every variation: old names, addresses, phone numbers (including tracking numbers) and domains.
- Search each one in quotes on Google, then check the core platforms directly.
- Record each result as correct, wrong, duplicate or closed.
- Ignore formatting differences. Google normalizes St and Street, Ste and Suite, LLC and Inc, and common phone formats. Fix real errors: old addresses, old numbers, wrong names and dead URLs.
- Fix in priority order: local citation cleanup starts with Google, Bing and Apple, then aggregators, large directories and industry sites.
- Recheck after four to six weeks, then quarterly. This is our routine, not a platform rule.

What should you do with duplicate listings?
Google allows only one profile per business, and anyone can suggest an edit or flag an inaccurate profile for removal. On other directories, claim the duplicate and ask the site to merge or remove it. For Yelp, Whitespark noted in the Local Search Forum that a normal suggested edit can work better than an API tool, because Yelp charges platforms more for API access.
What changes when a business moves or rebrands?
Update Google first. If a name change does not meet Google’s rebranding criteria, the old profile must be marked closed and a new one created. Then update Bing, Apple, aggregators and top directories. One agency in the Local Search Forum found aggregator-created listings the hardest to change and planned the update in phases.

How do multi-location and service area businesses handle citations?
How should a service area business manage citations?
- Google: if you do not serve customers at your address, hide it. You can set up to 20 service areas by city or postal code, generally within about 2 hours of driving.
- Other directories: use the same real address everywhere and hide it where the site allows. Bing can show only city and ZIP.
- Apple: a home-based contractor in the Local Search Forum reported Apple rejected his location for lacking a storefront or commercial address. That is a practitioner report, not a published Apple rule.
- No virtual offices. Google does not accept remote mailboxes or addresses a business rents for mail but does not operate from.
How do you keep citations accurate for multiple locations?
- One brand name: Google requires all locations in a country to use the same name, with limited exceptions.
- Local details: each location gets a local phone number rather than a central call center line, as Google advises, and its own location page as the website URL.
- Bulk tools: Apple Business supports adding multiple locations, and Bing offers bulk verification.
- One source of truth: a shared location sheet with one approver. Franchises have extra ownership questions, covered in our franchise SEO guide.

Which local citation tools are worth using?
The right tool depends on how many locations you manage and whether you want a one-off build or ongoing sync. Prices are as each vendor published them in October 2026.
| Option | Best for | Published pricing | If you stop paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual audit and submission | One location, tight budget | Free, costs time | Nothing to lose |
| BrightLocal Citation Builder | One-off submissions in 20+ countries | From $2 per citation | Listings stay live, per BrightLocal |
| BrightLocal Active Sync | API updates to Google, Apple Maps and Bing | Plan or add-on, no price listed | Check sync terms |
| Whitespark Listings Service | Done-for-you audit, cleanup and building | $399 to $999 per location | You keep every login, per Whitespark |
| Yext Listings | Multi-location brands wanting API sync | Not listed on product page | Ask before signing |

Judge any tool by accuracy and login ownership, not by how many sites it submits to. Ten correct, claimed listings beat 200 you cannot log into.
How does Hustle Marketers approach citations?
Citation management is part of our local SEO services, from $500+ a month and scoped per business. Our team is based in Zirakpur, India, and works with businesses in the US, UK, Australia and other markets.
- Audit before building: we find what is wrong before adding anything new.
- Core first: Google, Bing, Apple and your market’s aggregators come before any directory list.
- No bulk packages: we pick sites your customers and AI assistants actually use.
- You own the logins for every listing.
Agencies can hand this work to us under their own brand through white label local SEO, priced by the number of client accounts. Hustle Marketers holds a 4.9 out of 5 average from 591+ reviews across platforms, with Clutch Award wins in 2023, 2024 and 2026. Client work is under NDA, so we describe methods rather than name clients.
FAQs
What does “citations” mean in SEO?
In local SEO, a citation is any online mention of a business’s name, address and phone number, with or without a link. In AI search, “citation” also means a source an assistant shows beside its answer. The two overlap, because directory listings are often among the sources AI tools cite for local questions.
How many local citations does a business need?
Google publishes no number. Start with Google, Bing and Apple, the large directories for your country, the aggregators if you are in the US, and the main sites for your industry. Then compare with the businesses in your map pack. Matching their quality listings matters more than beating their total count.
Can wrong or duplicate citations hurt a business?
Yes. Google says it uses licensed third-party data and may update your Business Profile when sources report your details are incorrect or outdated. Wrong numbers and old addresses also send customers to the wrong place, and AI assistants can repeat them. Duplicates split reviews and blur which details are current.
How long do new citations take to go live?
It varies by site. BrightLocal completes submissions within 7 days, but says some sites take up to 6 weeks to publish. Whitespark says about 30% of listings are typically live when its report is sent, and some take months. Allow a few months before judging a citation project.
Is it worth paying for hundreds of directory submissions?
Usually not. Practitioners in the Local Search Forum report that most low-value directories are never indexed by Google and send no traffic. Bulk packages also create logins you do not control, which makes future cleanup harder. Spend the budget on core platforms, industry sites and earned mentions.
Do citations help a business show up in ChatGPT?
They help, but they are not the whole answer. BrightLocal found directories made up 15% of ChatGPT’s local search sources in late 2024, behind business websites at 58%. OpenAI names Microsoft among ChatGPT search’s providers, so accurate Bing and Yelp listings plus a clear website give it consistent facts.
How often should you audit local citations?
Run a full audit when you start local SEO and after any move, rebrand or phone change. After that, a quarterly check of Google, Bing, Apple and your top directories suits most single-location businesses. Multi-location brands should check monthly, because Google can apply user-suggested edits without your review.
How we created this guide
We read the top-ranking US guides for local citations and checked Google, Bing, Apple and OpenAI documentation directly. Figures come from Whitespark’s 2026 ranking factors survey and research by BrightLocal and Yext, each labeled with its limits. Practitioner views come from Local Search Forum threads from 2025 and 2026. Aggregator and directory status was checked on each company’s own site in October 2026. AI tools helped organize the research, and every fact links to its source.
