This hobby store SEO case study covers P-Rex Hobby, a Shopify store in Vancouver that sells Gunpla, Japanese model kits and anime figures to collectors in Canada and the US. In six months, organic clicks from Google rose from 71.2K to 103K. In the last 90 days, visits from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude grew 474%.

Google AI Mode now cites the store more often than any other shop in its answer for “18+ anime figure”. Every number on this page comes from P-Rex Hobby’s own Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console accounts, which we work in every week. Each one carries its date range, and we explain what the numbers do not prove further down.

Key Observations

Source: P-Rex Hobby GA4 and Google Search Console, screenshots below.

  1. AI assistant sessions went from 489 to 2,807 in 90 days (up 474%). ChatGPT sent 97% of them.
  2. Visitors from AI assistants engaged more: engaged sessions grew 564% and engagement rate rose from 49.7% to 57.5%.
  3. Google organic clicks grew 45% (71.2K to 103K) over six months, with average position improving from 9.8 to 8.6.
  4. In Google AI Mode, P-Rex Hobby earned four source citations, a named link and a source card in one answer.
  5. The work behind it was ordinary SEO done well for a niche: technical fixes, collection pages built around how collectors search, buyer guides and trust signals that AI systems can read.

Why Is SEO Harder for an Anime Figure and Gunpla Store?

SEO for a hobby store is harder than for most ecommerce shops because the catalog is huge, product names are codes, half the range does not exist yet, and buyers are wary of fakes. A generic ecommerce SEO plan misses all four. Here is what we were working with.

Product names are codes, not words

A Gunpla kit is named by grade, scale and mobile suit: “RG 1/144 Hi-v Gundam” or “MG 1/100 Gundam X”. Collectors search the same way, often with only the grade and the suit. If a store’s titles, collection names and filters do not match that pattern, Google cannot connect the search to the right page.

Pre-orders create pages for products that are months away

P-Rex Hobby lists many releases months before they arrive, each with its own estimated arrival month. That is good for sales, but it creates a steady flow of new URLs with little content and no reviews yet. Those pages need to be crawled and indexed fast, then updated when stock lands.

Collectors worry about bootlegs and failed pre-order stores

Collector communities are blunt about this. A PSA post in r/Gunpla warning that “Bandai does not sell on Amazon” drew over a thousand upvotes. After pre-order stores went bankrupt, one figure collector wrote that they “now i only buy from official stores or AMIAMI”. Trust is part of the ranking problem, and it is part of what AI answers repeat.

Mature collectibles have fewer paid options

Part of P-Rex Hobby’s range is 18+ figures, sold behind age-restricted browsing. Google Ads limits how sexual content can be advertised, and its sexual content policy states plainly that “Ads must not target minors.” With paid reach limited for that category, organic search and AI answers have to carry more of the demand.

One store, two countries

The store ships from Vancouver to both Canada and the US. Collectors in each country search with different currencies, shipping worries and competitor sets, so pages have to answer both without splitting into thin duplicates.

What Did Hustle Marketers Do for P-Rex Hobby?

We worked on four things from April 2026: technical SEO on Shopify, collection pages built around collector searches, buyer guides that answer real questions, and AI search optimization. None of it was a trick. It was making sure every page Google and AI systems might use was crawlable, specific and clearly trustworthy.

Technical SEO on Shopify

We started with crawl and index coverage, because a store with constant pre-order launches can only rank pages Google has actually found. The work covered structured data, crawl and index fixes, internal linking and site speed. Our technical SEO team treats Shopify’s fixed URL rules and filtered collection URLs as a given and works around them rather than fighting them.

Collection pages built around how collectors search

Collectors shop by grade, series, brand, character and maker. P-Rex Hobby’s store lets visitors browse by categories, brands, series, characters and vendors, and we treated each of those as a search landing page.

That meant clear titles, short useful intro copy, and internal links that connect a series page to its grades and its newest kits. This is the core of most ecommerce SEO work, and on a hobby store it decides whether long-tail searches find a page or a filter.

Buyer guides that answer collector questions

Collectors ask practical questions before they buy: which grade to start with, how long a build takes, how two product lines differ. The store’s guides answer exactly those, for example where to buy Gunpla in Canada, plus explainers on build times by grade, 30 Minutes Missions and the SD Gundam lines. These pages give Google and AI assistants clean passages to quote, and they link straight into the matching collections.

AI search optimization

For ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Mode, we checked that AI crawlers could reach the store, kept product data consistent, and made the store’s trust signals easy to find and quote.

P-Rex Hobby is listed as a Bandai Recommended Hobby Store and as a Good Smile Company Partner Shop, its product pages show an estimated arrival month, and its pre-order policy sets out cancellation and refund terms. Those are the facts an AI answer needs before it recommends a shop. This is the same approach our AI SEO agency uses for every store.

What Results Did P-Rex Hobby See?

P-Rex Hobby saw growth in three places: AI assistant visits, citations inside Google AI Mode, and ordinary Google organic clicks. The AI numbers grew fastest, but the organic gains are larger in absolute terms and are what made the AI citations possible.

AI assistant traffic: 489 to 2,807 sessions in 90 days

GA4 traffic acquisition report for prexhobby.com showing AI Assistant sessions of 2,807 vs 489, up 474 percent, with ChatGPT sending 2,735 sessions, Gemini 79 and Claude 14
GA4 AI Assistant channel for P-Rex Hobby, 8 Jul to 5 Oct 2026 compared with 8 Apr to 6 Jul 2026.

In GA4, the AI Assistant channel sent 2,807 sessions between 8 July and 5 October 2026, up from 489 in the previous 90 days. ChatGPT drove almost all of it.

AI assistant8 Apr to 6 Jul 20268 Jul to 5 Oct 2026Change
ChatGPT (chatgpt.com)4672,735+486%
Gemini (gemini.google.com)1579+427%
Claude (claude.ai)414+250%
Total, as reported by GA44892,807+474%

The rows do not match the totals exactly (2,828 vs 2,807 in the latest period, 486 vs 489 in the earlier one). GA4 estimates session counts, so per-source rows and totals rarely match exactly. We quote GA4’s own total.

Do visitors from ChatGPT engage with the store?

Yes. Visitors from AI assistants engaged more in the latest period, not less.

In GA4, engaged sessions rose from 243 to 1,614 (up 564%), engagement rate went from 49.7% to 57.5%, and events per session rose 73%, from 8.69 to 15.00. Average engagement time stayed flat at 36 seconds against 37. People arriving from an AI answer tend to have a product in mind already, and they act on it.

Google AI Mode: the most cited store for “18+ anime figure”

In a Google AI Mode answer for “18+ anime figure”, P-Rex Hobby appears as a source chip four times: in the definition, in the introduction to specialist manufacturers, against Native and against Q-six. It is linked by name in the “Where to Shop” section and listed as a source card on the right. No other store in that answer is cited as often.

The query is commercial. Someone typing it is looking for a place to buy. Being the store the answer leans on is worth more than a blue link lower down, and it comes from the same pages that rank in normal search.

Organic search: 71.2K to 103K clicks in six months

Google Search Console performance report for prexhobby.com showing 103K clicks and 4.08M impressions in the last 6 months against 71.2K clicks and 3.55M impressions, CTR 2.5 percent vs 2 percent, average position 8.6 vs 9.8
Google Search Console, web search, last 6 months compared with the previous 6 months.

Search Console shows 103K clicks in the last six months against 71.2K in the six months before, a 45% increase. Impressions grew 15% (3.55M to 4.08M), so most of the gain came from ranking higher and earning more clicks per impression, not just appearing more.

Average CTR rose from 2.0% to 2.5% and average position improved from 9.8 to 8.6. The daily chart shows clicks lifting from around day 120 of the 180 day window and staying higher.

How Do Google Rankings Lead to AI Citations?

AI answers are built on top of search, so the pages that rank are the pages that get cited. Google says there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode”. A page only has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, according to its AI features guidance for site owners.

AI Mode also does not run one search. Google describes a “query fan-out technique”, breaking a question into subtopics and searching each one. For “18+ anime figure”, the subtopics are things like what the category means, which makers lead it, and where to buy safely. P-Rex Hobby had a strong page for each, so it was picked up again and again inside one answer.

ChatGPT works differently but lands in the same place. OpenAI’s search crawler is OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. A store that blocks it, or hides key facts in images and scripts, gives ChatGPT nothing to quote. How Did We Measure AI Assistant Traffic in GA4?

We used GA4’s built-in AI Assistant channel. Google added it on 13 May 2026, and it gives sessions from recognised assistants the medium “ai-assistant”. Google’s default channel definitions list sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok.

Two details matter when you read these numbers:

  1. The channel “excludes Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode.” Clicks from AI Mode land in Organic Search in GA4, and in the Web search type in Search Console. So the AI Mode citations above add to the organic numbers, not the AI Assistant numbers.
  2. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it sends, according to OpenAI’s publisher FAQ. That is why ChatGPT is attributed so cleanly. Visits from apps that pass no referrer can still fall into Direct.

For a deeper look at tracking this across tools, see our guide to tracking brand visibility in AI search.

What Do the Numbers Not Show?

These results are real, but they have limits, and you should know them before you compare your store with this one.

  1. The GA4 AI Assistant channel launched on 13 May 2026, inside the earlier comparison period. The report does classify April to July sessions under the channel, but the baseline of 489 may be slightly understated.
  2. We are not showing revenue or orders from AI visitors here. Engagement grew, but this page does not claim a sales figure.
  3. The AI Mode screenshot is one query at one point in time. AI answers change between users, sessions and days.
  4. Six months of organic data includes seasonal swings. Pre-order cycles and new Gundam releases move demand, and they do not line up neatly with our start date.
  5. Search Console counts AI Mode and AI Overview clicks inside normal web search, so we cannot split out how much of the 103K came from AI features.

What Can Other Hobby and Collectibles Stores Learn From This?

Any hobby, toy or collectibles store can repeat most of this, because none of it depends on budget. The order matters more than the tactics.

  1. Fix crawl and index coverage first, especially for pre-order and new-arrival pages.
  2. Name collections the way collectors search: grade, scale, series, brand, character.
  3. Write short buyer guides for the questions people ask before their first purchase.
  4. Put proof of authenticity in plain text: authorised dealer status, sourcing, pre-order and refund terms.
  5. Make sure AI crawlers like OAI-SearchBot are not blocked, and that key facts are not locked inside images.
  6. Track AI assistants as their own channel in GA4 and check AI answers for your main buying queries every month.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does SEO for a hobby store involve?

SEO for a hobby store covers technical fixes on the store platform, collection pages named the way collectors search (grade, series, brand, character), product pages for in-stock and pre-order items, and buyer guides. Trust signals such as authorised dealer status matter more than in most niches because of bootlegs.

How did P-Rex Hobby get cited in Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode breaks a question into subtopics and searches each one. P-Rex Hobby had indexed, well-ranked pages for the definition, the leading makers and where to buy, so the answer drew on it several times. Google says there are no extra requirements beyond being indexed and snippet eligible.

How do you track ChatGPT traffic in GA4?

GA4 has a default AI Assistant channel since 13 May 2026. Sessions from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and similar assistants get the medium “ai-assistant”. ChatGPT also adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its links. AI Mode and AI Overview clicks are not in this channel; they count as Organic Search.

Is AI search traffic worth it for an ecommerce store?

For P-Rex Hobby, AI assistant visitors had a higher engagement rate (57.5%) and more events per session than before. The volume is still small next to organic search, which sent around 103K clicks in six months. AI visibility adds to SEO; it does not replace it.

Does Shopify block AI crawlers?

Shopify’s help docs do not say its default robots.txt blocks AI crawlers. P-Rex Hobby’s robots.txt has no rules naming AI bots. Store owners can edit robots.txt through a robots.txt.liquid template, but Shopify warns mistakes can cost all traffic, so check before changing it.

How long did these results take?

The SEO and AI search work started in April 2026. The Search Console chart shows clicks lifting around four months into the six month window. The AI assistant growth is measured over the 90 days from 8 July to 5 October 2026.

Can you market 18+ collectibles with Google Ads?

Only in a limited way. Google’s sexual content policy restricts how this content is shown, depending on the search, the user’s age and local law, and ads must not target minors. That is why organic search and AI answers matter more for this part of a hobby store’s range.
