The most searched keywords on Google are brand and utility searches. Ahrefs’ US list, updated September 1, 2026, is led by youtube, amazon, chatgpt, gmail, wordle, facebook and weather. Each gets an estimated 40 million to 86 million searches a month. Almost none of them are worth bidding on in Google Ads. The keywords worth your budget are the most searched terms in your own niche with buying intent.
This guide gives you the 2026 lists with sources and dates. It also covers the most expensive Google Ads keywords and why every list disagrees. Then it shows how to find high-intent keywords for your business and turn one seed into an upload-ready list.
Every search volume and CPC below is a third-party estimate. The numbers change by tool, month and country, so treat them as a ranking, not a promise of clicks. At Hustle Marketers we use them to sort ideas, then trust the impressions and search terms inside the ad account.
Key Observations
- The top US searches in September 2026 are navigational. We counted 57 of Ahrefs’ top 100 as people typing a brand or website name.
- Only 2 of those 100 searches, “food near me” and “restaurants near me”, are generic commercial searches, and they only suit restaurants.
- Legal keywords cost the most. WordStream’s 2026 benchmarks put Attorneys and Legal Services at a $9.87 average CPC, against $5.42 for all industries.
- “Most expensive keyword” lists measure different things: bid ranges, tool estimates or live bids. That is why one lawyer keyword shows $210 and another shows $1,540.
- High volume is not high value. What a click is worth equals your conversion rate times the value of a conversion.
- Find your own most searched keywords with Keyword Planner, Google Trends, your search terms report and Search Console, then cross-check in Semrush or Ahrefs.
- Turn a seed keyword into a match-typed list with our free Keyword Wrapper, then prune it with negatives and the search terms report.
What are the most searched AdWords keywords?
The most searched AdWords keywords are the same as Google’s most searched keywords overall. They are brand names like youtube, amazon, chatgpt, gmail and facebook, plus quick answers like weather and translate. Google does not publish an official “most searched keywords” list for advertisers. Every list you see comes from a third-party tool’s estimates.
AdWords has been called Google Ads since Google announced the rebrand on June 27, 2018. People still search the old name, so the question lives on. The data behind it is unchanged. Keyword Planner inside Google Ads shows average monthly searches, while Ahrefs and Semrush model their own estimates.
The Hustle Marketers team sorted every keyword in Ahrefs’ US top 100 Google searches by what the searcher wants. The list was updated September 1, 2026. The categories are our judgement calls, but the pattern is hard to miss.
| Type of search | Count (of 100) | Examples from the list | Worth bidding on for a typical business? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand or website navigation | 57 | youtube, amazon, gmail, walmart, home depot, zillow, costco | No. The searcher wants one site. Only the brand owner should bid. |
| Sports, news and people | 19 | nfl, world cup schedule, nba scores, news, dodgers | No. They want scores and headlines, and interest fades within days. |
| Quick answers and utilities | 17 | weather, translate, calculator, usps tracking, gold price today | No. Google answers most of these on the results page. |
| Games and puzzles | 5 | wordle, connections, solitaire, snake game | No. |
| Local commercial | 2 | food near me, restaurants near me | Only for restaurants and delivery, inside your service area. |
Why are the top Google searches useless for most advertisers?
They are useless because the searcher already knows where they want to go. Someone typing “amazon” wants Amazon, so an ad for your store is an interruption, not an answer. Even when your ad shows, few people click and fewer buy.
Brand terms are worth bidding on for their owners, which is why we keep them in their own campaign. Our guide to splitting branded and non-branded search explains why mixing them breaks your data.
The list still teaches one useful lesson: scale. Navigational demand dwarfs commercial demand. A niche keyword with 1,300 searches a month can still be one of the best keywords in your account.
What are the most searched keywords on Google in 2026?
In the US, the most searched keyword on Google is youtube, with about 85.9 million estimated monthly searches in Ahrefs’ September 2026 data. Globally, Ahrefs puts chatgpt first at about 811 million. Here is the US top 10.
| Rank | Keyword | Est. US monthly searches | Search type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | youtube | 85,890,000 | Brand navigation |
| 2 | amazon | 85,830,000 | Brand navigation |
| 3 | chatgpt | 68,580,000 | Brand navigation |
| 4 | gmail | 57,350,000 | Brand navigation |
| 5 | wordle | 48,370,000 | Game |
| 6 | 41,640,000 | Brand navigation | |
| 7 | weather | 40,230,000 | Quick answer |
| 8 | 36,030,000 | Brand navigation | |
| 9 | chat gpt | 31,830,000 | Brand navigation |
| 10 | translate | 29,740,000 | Quick answer |
Source: Ahrefs, US estimates, page updated September 1, 2026. Ahrefs removes adult queries from the list.
One thing stands out in 2026. ChatGPT appears twice in the top 10: “chatgpt” and “chat gpt” together pass 100 million estimated US searches a month. Ahrefs’ global list is led by chatgpt, followed by whatsapp web and youtube.
What were the top trending Google searches of 2025?
Charlie Kirk, KPop Demon Hunters, Labubu, iPhone 17 and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act were the top five trending US searches of 2025. That ranking comes from Google’s Year in Search 2025 for the US. Gemini topped the global list.
Trending is not the same as most searched. As Search Engine Land reported, Google’s lists show the searches with the highest sustained spike in 2025 compared with 2024. That makes Year in Search useful for timely ad copy and content ideas, but useless for estimating keyword volume.
Why do Ahrefs, Semrush and other tools show different top searches?
Each tool estimates volume from its own data and time window. Semrush’s list uses January 2026 volumes. Exploding Topics uses a rolling 12-month average of Semrush data. Ahrefs models its own database. Here is what that does to the same five keywords.
| Keyword | Ahrefs (updated Sep 1, 2026) | Semrush blog (Jan 2026 data) | Backlinko (Semrush data, updated May 12, 2026) | Exploding Topics (12-month average, updated Jan 23, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| youtube | 85.9M | 226M | 185M | 185M |
| amazon | 85.8M | 151M | 151M | 124M |
| chatgpt | 68.6M | 124M | 55.6M | 45.5M |
| weather | 40.2M | 151M | 9.1M | 37.2M |
| food near me | 10.8M | 55.6M | 30.4M | 30.4M |
“Weather” runs from 9.1 million to 151 million, a gap of more than 16 times. Two of those figures come from Semrush data pulled at different times, as shown on Backlinko’s top 100 and on Semrush’s own blog. Semrush’s blog uses a single month, while Exploding Topics uses a 12-month average, so they rarely match for a word like weather.
Google’s own numbers are not exact either. Keyword Planner’s “Avg. monthly searches” counts a keyword plus its close variants, and Google says its search volume statistics are rounded. So pick one tool for ranking ideas and stick with it.
What are the most expensive Google Ads keywords in 2026?
The most expensive Google Ads keywords in 2026 are legal injury terms, which top most of the highest CPC keyword lists we checked. In the Keyword Planner data ppc.io pulled in July 2026, “truck collision attorney” showed a top-of-page bid range of $54 to $732. It gets about 60,500 US searches a month. Insurance, mortgage, rehab and B2B software terms also fill these lists.
At the industry level, WordStream’s 2026 Google Ads benchmarks cover more than 13,000 US search campaigns from April 2025 to March 2026. Legal leads again, and the all-industry average CPC rose from $5.26 to $5.42. The 2025 column comes from WordStream’s 2025 report (April 2024 to March 2025 data).
| Industry | Avg. CPC 2026 | Avg. CPC 2025 | Conversion rate 2026 | Cost per lead 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All industries | $5.42 | $5.26 | 8.18% | $66.69 |
| Attorneys & Legal Services | $9.87 | $8.58 | 5.55% | $131.63 |
| Home & Home Improvement | $8.33 | $7.85 | 8.05% | $90.92 |
| Dentists & Dental Services | $8.00 | $7.85 | 10.67% | $72.97 |
| Finance & Insurance | $3.39 | $3.46 | 2.64% | $74.44 |
| Real Estate | $3.22 | $2.53 | 3.70% | $102.51 |
Arts and Entertainment was the cheapest industry in the 2026 report at $1.63 per click. Finance and Insurance averages only $3.39. Yet “texas auto insurance quotes” showed a $48 to $126 top-of-page bid range in ppc.io’s July 2026 pull. Industry averages blend cheap clicks with the few expensive money terms, so they hide how much the best keywords cost.
For a full breakdown of budgets by business type, see our 2026 Google Ads cost guide.
Why do “most expensive keyword” lists disagree so much?
They disagree because they measure different things. Some show Keyword Planner’s top-of-page bid range, some show one tool’s CPC estimate, and some show live bids at the top of the auction. Almost none show what advertisers pay on average.
| Source and data date | Method | Top example | What the number really means |
|---|---|---|---|
| ppc.io (July 2026) | Google Keyword Planner API, US | truck collision attorney: $54 to $732 | Top-of-page bid range. Google defines the low and high ends as roughly the 20th and 80th percentile of past top-of-page bids. |
| Fraud Blocker (Ahrefs data, January 2026) | Ahrefs CPC, US, 750+ monthly searches, local terms excluded | motorcycle injury lawyer: $210 | One modeled CPC estimate per keyword |
| Analyze AI (May 2026) | “Live” CPC for the highest-bid US keywords | drunk driving accident lawyer houston: $1,540 | Bids at the very top of the auction on local long-tail terms |
| BloggersPassion (updated Feb 28, 2026) | Tool and date not stated | CIT Bank questions: $1,000 | Branded questions with 0 to 20 searches a month |
| WordStream (Apr 2025 to Mar 2026) | 13,000+ live US search campaigns | Attorneys & Legal Services: $9.87 | Actual average CPC across whole campaigns |
Our rule at Hustle Marketers: a “most expensive” list tells you which industries have high customer values. It does not tell you what you will pay. Analyze AI’s May 2026 list even includes “internet randomly drops for a few seconds” at $1,455 a click. No one should read that as a market price.
Why are legal, insurance and mortgage keywords so expensive?
They are expensive because one customer is worth a lot and many firms chase the same small pool of searches. A signed injury case, an insurance policy that renews for years or a closed mortgage can pay for dozens of clicks. When every competitor can afford a high bid, the auction price rises.
Mortgage figures show how loose these lists are. ClickPatrol says mortgage keywords such as “mortgage refinance” often exceed $50 to $100 per click (updated September 24, 2026, method not stated). ALM Corp lists “refinance mortgage” at $80 to $250 (July 14, 2026, citing Ahrefs research). Same topic, very different price tags.
Your real CPC comes from the auction: your bid, your ad quality and what competitors are willing to pay. Better ad relevance and landing pages can lower what you pay for the same position. Our guide to improving Google Ads Quality Score covers the levers.
Why doesn’t high search volume mean high value?

High volume does not mean high value because clicks only pay when searchers buy. A click is worth your conversion rate times the value of a conversion. A keyword with a million searches and no buyers is worth less than one with 500 searches and an urgent need.
We judge every keyword on three filters:
- Intent: is the searcher trying to buy, hire or book, or just learn, navigate or check a score?
- Cost: does the top-of-page bid range fit under your break-even CPC?
- Conversion rate: will your landing page turn enough of those clicks into leads or sales?
The break-even math is simple. Say a lead is worth $200 and 5% of clicks become leads. Then you can pay up to $10 per click before you lose money. Our free CPC calculator has a maximum affordable CPC tab that does this for you.
The table below shows the difference between high-volume and high-intent keywords. We left volumes out on purpose, because they vary by market. Check your own numbers in Keyword Planner.
| High-volume keyword | What most searchers want | Higher-intent version | Why it converts better |
|---|---|---|---|
| insurance | Definitions, logins, news | texas auto insurance quotes | Names the product, the state and the action |
| lawyer | General research, jobs, lists | truck accident lawyer near me | Names the case type and wants someone local |
| food near me | Any nearby meal | pizza delivery plano | Matches one menu and one delivery area |
| running shoes | Browsing, reviews, images | mens wide trail running shoes size 11 | Size and fit mean they are ready to buy |
| crm | Definitions, logins to a CRM they already use | crm software for small business pricing | Pricing shows a buying stage |
| water damage | Photos, insurance questions, DIY fixes | water damage restoration dallas | Service plus city signals a hire |
Should you ever bid on high-volume head terms?
Yes, but only with guardrails. A head term makes sense when it describes exactly what you sell, like “plumber” for a plumbing company. It also works when you have solid conversion tracking and enough data for Smart Bidding to pick the right searches.
Google already stretches your reach for you. Broad match and AI Max for Search campaigns, which Google describes as using keywordless technology, match searches beyond the words you enter. That is one reason piling on generic keywords rarely helps, as we explain in why keyword obsession hurts Google Ads performance.
Ishant Sharma, founder of Hustle Marketers, has run Google Ads accounts since 2013. His rule of thumb: treat every head term as unproven until the search terms report shows it brings buyers.
How do you find the most searched keywords for your business?
Start with Google’s own data, then cross-check. Keyword Planner gives estimated volume and bid ranges, Google Trends shows seasonality, and your search terms report and Search Console show real queries. Semrush or Ahrefs fill the gaps and show what competitors target.
- Pull ideas in Keyword Planner. Choose “Discover new keywords”, enter three to five seed terms and your website, and set your location and language. Sort by Avg. monthly searches, then read the top-of-page bid ranges. Our Keyword Planner tutorial walks through every screen.
- Check seasonality in Google Trends. Compare two to five terms over five years. Trends uses a sample of searches and scales interest from 0 to 100, so it shows shape, not volume.
- Mine your search terms report. It lists the real searches that triggered your ads. Google leaves out low-volume terms for privacy, so some searches will be missing.
- Read your Search Console queries. The Performance report shows organic queries with clicks and impressions. Queries with many impressions and few clicks often make good ad keywords.
- Cross-check in Semrush or Ahrefs. Use them for competitor keywords and a second opinion on volume, not as the final word.
- Score and shortlist. Keep terms that pass the intent, cost and conversion filters above. Our Google Ads keyword research guide covers the full method.
| Data source | What it shows | Real volume? | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyword Planner | Avg. monthly searches, bid ranges, competition | Estimate, rounded, grouped with close variants | Sizing demand and planning bids |
| Google Trends | Relative interest from 0 to 100 | No | Seasonality and rising terms |
| Year in Search | Biggest spikes versus the year before | No | Timely creative and content ideas |
| Search terms report | Real searches that triggered your ads | Real impressions, low-volume terms hidden | Finding winners and negatives |
| Search Console | Organic queries, clicks and impressions | Real impressions for your site | Finding proven demand |
| Semrush or Ahrefs | Modeled volume, CPC, competitor keywords | Estimate | Competitor research and cross-checks |
Which keyword tool is most accurate for search volume?
No tool is exact. Ahrefs’ own help center says search volume in any tool “is always an estimation”, because only Google has the exact data. Keyword Planner is closest to the source, but it rounds numbers and groups close variants.
The gaps can be large. In a November 2024 Practical Ecommerce test, “reddit marketing” showed 880,000 US searches in Google Ads, 590,000 in Semrush and 100,000 in Ahrefs. We use tool volume to rank ideas. After a few weeks of spend, impressions in the account become the real number.
Why does Keyword Planner show ranges instead of exact numbers?
Accounts with little or no active ad spend often see broad ranges, such as 1,000 to 10,000, instead of exact averages. It is a common complaint. Advertisers ask about it in the Google Ads Community, and sellers in the Etsy Community report the same switch to ranges.
The fix is to run a small, tightly targeted campaign and read impressions, or to cross-check the range against Semrush, Ahrefs or Search Console. Ranges are still fine for ranking ideas against each other.
When do the most searched keywords peak?
Most high-volume searches peak around events and calendar dates. Sports, tax season, holidays and product launches create short spikes, then demand falls back. Your niche keywords follow their own calendar, which you can see in Keyword Planner’s monthly trend and in Google Trends.
The 2026 data shows this clearly. Semrush’s January 2026 US data had “when is the super bowl 2026” at 3.35 million searches. “Where my refund” had 2.74 million. Both sat among its top questions. By September 2026, the FIFA World Cup had pushed six World Cup terms into Ahrefs’ US top 100.
How do you plan a budget around seasonal keyword peaks?
Plan your budget month by month, not as one flat number. Look up each core keyword’s monthly trend, then give peak months more budget and quiet months less. To see how Google Ads compares with other channels before you set that budget, read how much advertising costs in 2026.
- Pull 12 months of trend data for your top 10 to 20 keywords in Keyword Planner.
- Confirm the pattern over five years in Google Trends, so one odd year does not fool you.
- Set monthly budgets with our Google Ads budget calculator, using the CPC and conversion rate for each period.
- For short sales, Google offers seasonality adjustments for Smart Bidding. Google says they suit events of 1 to 7 days and may not work as well beyond 14 days.
- Pause event-only keywords once the event ends, so they stop spending on stale demand.
How do you turn one seed keyword into a Google Ads keyword list?
You expand the seed into services and locations, sort by intent, wrap each term in match types, add negatives and check the numbers. Here is the process we use at Hustle Marketers on one example. Assume a water damage restoration company serving Dallas, Plano, Irving and Garland. Figures are assumptions unless a source is named.
- Check demand for the seed. Seed: “water damage restoration”. For reference, ppc.io’s July 2026 Keyword Planner pull showed “water damage restoration dallas” at 1,300 US searches a month. Its top-of-page bid range was $22 to $113. Your own pull will differ by date and settings.
- Sort ideas by intent. Hire now: “water damage restoration dallas”, “flooded basement cleanup”. Research: “how to dry wet drywall”. Wrong fit: “water damage restoration jobs”, “restoration course”.
- Build two lists. Services: water damage restoration, water removal, flood cleanup, burst pipe cleanup. Locations: dallas, plano, irving, garland.
- Combine and wrap them. Paste both lists into the Combine lists tab of our free Keyword Wrapper and set “Wrap the result as” to Exact match. Run it again for Phrase match. Four services times four cities gives 16 combinations, or 32 keywords across both match types.
- Add negatives. Paste jobs, salary, course, training, diy and free into the first tab, pick negative phrase, and tick “Add singular and plural to negatives”. Our Google Ads negative keywords guide has fuller lists.
- Export for Google Ads Editor. The Editor export tab builds a CSV with Campaign, Ad group, Keyword and Match type columns.
- Check break-even CPC. Assume an average job of $3,000 at 40% gross margin, so $1,200 profit per job. If 30% of leads become jobs, a lead is worth $360. If 10% of clicks become leads, break-even CPC is $36.
- Review after two to four weeks. Paste search terms into the Search terms workflow tab. Add proven converters as exact match and wasted-spend terms as negative phrase.
A $36 break-even sits inside that $22 to $113 range. So this business can compete, but not for the top slot at any price. That is the kind of answer a “most searched” list will never give you.
The finished structure is one ad group per service. The match type symbols follow Google’s keyword matching rules: brackets for exact, quotes for phrase.
| Ad group | Example keywords | Match types | Landing page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water damage restoration | [water damage restoration dallas], “water damage restoration plano” | Exact and phrase | Restoration service page |
| Water removal | [water removal irving], “water removal garland” | Exact and phrase | Water extraction page |
| Flood cleanup | [flood cleanup plano], “flood cleanup dallas” | Exact and phrase | Flood cleanup page |
| Burst pipe cleanup | [burst pipe cleanup garland], “burst pipe cleanup irving” | Exact and phrase | Burst pipe page |
| Campaign negatives | “jobs”, “salary”, “course”, “training”, “diy”, “free” | Negative phrase | Not applicable |
What do people get wrong about the most searched keywords?
The biggest mistake is treating a popularity list as a shopping list. These are the myths we see most often in new accounts and community threads.
- “Top searches are the best keywords to bid on.” Most are navigational. Bid on searches that match what you sell.
- “Keyword Planner volume equals the clicks I will get.” Volume is searches, not clicks. Your share depends on budget, bids, ad rank and match type.
- “Trending means high volume.” Year in Search ranks spikes, not totals.
- “All tools should show the same number.” They use different data and time windows, as the table above shows.
- “The most expensive keyword costs $1,000 a click.” Many of those figures are bid ceilings or tool artifacts on tiny volumes.
- “Low-volume keywords are worthless.” A term with a few hundred searches and clear intent can beat a head term on profit.
The Hustle Marketers checklist before you bid on a high-volume keyword
Run these ten checks before any big keyword goes live. They are quick, and they catch the problems we most often find in account audits.
- Search the keyword yourself. Do the results show buyers’ pages or answers, maps and news?
- Is it someone else’s brand? If yes, skip it.
- Does the top-of-page bid range fit under your break-even CPC?
- Does one landing page answer this exact search?
- Is demand seasonal? Check five years in Google Trends.
- Is the volume from your service area only, not the whole country?
- Have you added obvious negatives such as jobs, free, DIY and definitions?
- Which match type fits? Start expensive terms on exact or phrase, and use broad only with strong conversion data.
- Is conversion tracking firing? Without it, you cannot judge any keyword.
- Have you booked a search terms review two to four weeks after launch?
Frequently asked questions
What is the single most searched word on Google?
In the US it is “youtube”, which tops both Ahrefs’ September 2026 list and Semrush’s January 2026 data. Globally, Ahrefs puts “chatgpt” first with about 811 million estimated monthly searches. Rankings shift month to month, so always check the date on any list.
Is AdWords the same as Google Ads?
Yes. Google renamed AdWords to Google Ads in 2018, and the keyword tools moved with it. Guides that say “AdWords keywords” mean the same thing as Google Ads keywords today.
What is the average cost per click in Google Ads in 2026?
WordStream’s 2026 benchmarks put the average at $5.42 across US search campaigns, up from $5.26 a year earlier. Industry averages ran from $1.63 for Arts and Entertainment to $9.87 for Attorneys and Legal Services. Your own CPC depends on your keywords, location, ad quality and competitors.
Can Google Trends tell me how many people searched a keyword?
No. Google Trends shows relative interest on a 0 to 100 scale, based on a sample of searches. Use it for timing and comparisons, and use Keyword Planner for volume estimates.
What does “popular keywords” mean in Google Ads?
Inside Google Ads, “popular keywords” usually refers to Ad Strength feedback on responsive search ads, not the most popular keywords on Google. Google suggests using your ad group’s popular keywords, shown while you build the ad, in your headlines. It is about your own ad group, not what the whole country searches.
Are “near me” keywords worth bidding on?
They can be for local businesses, as long as your location targeting matches your real service area. “Food near me” is in Ahrefs’ US top 100, but it only helps restaurants and delivery services. Test “near me” terms on phrase match first and watch the search terms report closely.
How often do the top Google search lists change?
Ahrefs updates its list monthly and marks each keyword’s movement. Similarweb’s list uses one month of traffic data, so news spikes can jump to the top. Google’s Year in Search comes out once a year.
How many monthly searches does a keyword need before it is worth bidding on?
There is no fixed minimum. The right test is value: volume times conversion rate times what a customer is worth. A service-plus-city keyword with 1,300 searches a month can be one of your most profitable terms.
